Accompanied bikes on trains in Switzerland - important information.

  • You can take your bike on a train or bus only if there is enough space available. (For buses, we recommend making a telephone reservation first. You will find the numbers to call in the relevant sections of the timetable).
  • Please note that on fine days, trains leaving Zurich for the Gotthard, Graubünden or the Seeland/Jura between 07:00 and 09:00 are likely to be especially full.
  • At the weekend, there are no restrictions on accompanied bikes on S-Bahn trains in Zurich. From Mondays to Fridays, however, accompanied bikes are allowed only from 08:00 to 16:00 and from 19:00 to 06:00.
  • Groups of 10 or more people are not allowed to take accompanied bikes on trains. Group outings such as parties of schoolchildren are therefore advised to use our bike rental service instead. You will find all the relevant information on this service at www.rentabike.chNew window or in the brochure "Mit Velo, Auto und Zug von Tür zu Tür" (available in German, French and Italian).
  • If the members of your group still want to take their own bikes, they should send their bikes as unaccompanied luggage. Bikes can be transported to any station with a luggage-handling facility.
  • Passengers are allowed to take only one bike each.
  • From 21 march till 31 october, passenger wishing to take their bikes with them on Intercity tiliting trains (train-category ICN) must pay a CHF 5.– reservation fee.
  • Reservations are also compulsory für groups of six or more travelling with bikes throughout the Postbus network.
  • It is strictly forbidden to ride bikes on platforms. Please push your bike when on the platform.
  • Crossing the tracks is prohibited with or without a bike.

Useful tips.

The right train.

Accompanied bikes are allowed on almost all SBB trains.

  • Those trains on which accompanied bikes are not allowed are marked with the pictogram both in the printed timetable and on the yellow departure boards displayed in stations. Trains for which bike reservations are compulsory are marked with the bike reservation symbol or a reference number.
  • In the electronic timetable (CD or online timetable) go to "Options/Products" and mark the "carriage of bicycles required" field.

The right carriage.

  • The blue train information board shows you whereabouts on the train the bicycle compartment will be located so that you can go to the right part of the platform before the train arrives.
  • The bike symbol on the doors will also guide you to the right compartment.
  • It is a good idea to get organised before the train arrives – for example by deciding in advance who will take care of the children and baggage and who will load the bikes.

Safe and easy loading into luggage vans.

Single bikes are best loaded through the passenger door of the luggage van.

Luggage van loading doors.

If you have several bikes, it is best to enter the luggage van through the passenger door and then open the loading door from the inside by lowering or lifting the safety catch. The loading door must be properly closed before the train departs and left closed until the train has once again come to a standstill.

Guardrail.

Raise the guardrail after opening the loading door and be sure to fold it down again as soon as you have finished loading or unloading.

Inform train staff.

Inform the train staff that you have loaded a bike or bikes onto the train and tell them where you intend to get off. Our train staff are always happy to provide information and will make sure you can unload your bike or bikes safely.

Unloading your bike.

Please return to the luggage van or bike compartment in plenty of time so that you have enough time for unloading.

Liability.

Accompanied bikes count as «chargeable hand luggage» and are therefore the responsibility of the person who loads them. SBB shall be liable only if it is at fault.
