Your rights at a passenger.
When the EU Regulation on the rights and obligations of passengers comes into force on 13 December 2009, new compensation rules will apply to international rail services originating or terminating in Switzerland. These give customers the same rights vis-à-vis all railway companies, regardless of what service they use or whether they travel by day or night.
The core elements of passengers' new rights are two compensation levels, which depend on how late trains arrive: if a train is delayed by 60 minutes or longer, customers are entitled to a refund of 25% of the fare – increasing to 50% if it is delayed by 120 minutes or longer. For TGV connections 30 minutes' delay entitles you to a refund of one third of the fare, 120 minutes to half of it.
Further detailed provisions over and above these compensation levels apply to delays on national and international services. These specify, for example, the cases in which you are entitled to hotel accommodation or to utilise alternative means of transport such as taxis.
More information on this can be found on the relevant sub-pages, and in the FAQs on national and international passenger services.
